Services for D. Morris Brantley, 85, of Ben Wheeler are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2010, at Edom United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Craft and the Rev. David Johnson officiating under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home, Canton. Burial will be in Edom Cemetery, Edom.
He passed away April 13, 2010, in Tyler.
Mr. Brantley was born April 30, 1924, in Edom to Harris and Ollie Fulgham Brantley.
Mr. Morris graduated from Van ISD in 1941, playing on the state championship basketball team that year.
After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
After graduating from SMU, he began a long career with the Dallas ISD in the Physical Education Department, retiring as director of physical education.
After retirement, he returned to Edom and served two terms as mayor of his hometown. He was also very involved in the Edom United Methodist Church for more than 30 years, serving as trustee not only at Edom UMC but also trustee for the Tyler District UMC. He was also very active in the Edom Methodist Men's group. He loved gardening, cattle and the outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Shirley Brantley; and sisters, Vivian Colley and Fairy Palmer.
Surviving are wife of 34 years, Judy Brantley of Ben Wheeler; and other family members and friends.
Pallbearers will be Elmer Joe McLean, Pat Fowler, Ron McDougal, Larry Murphy, Carlton Smith, Roger Maddox, Burt Rowlins and Mickey Poteet.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Edom Methodist Men.
Family will receive friends at the church for one hour after the service.
