Kayla Adams: Ancestors

Adams Ancestors and Descendants

Most Americans can trace their heritage back at least four generations. While I was able to trace your Adams family back to the fourth generation from you, given that your great-grandfather was born in 1883, I would expect to be able to find at least one more generation. Unfortunately, I didn’t. I hope you are able to make sense of what you will find below. If there is any incorrect information or if I have missed something substantial, please let me know. I would also be glad to receive any constructive criticism; I’m trying to get better, so let me have it!

Clyde Edward Adams was born on Thursday, February 15, 1883 in Polk County, Texas [1]. He first appears in the United States census in 1900.

He is enumerated in the household of Joseph Boyd [2], as follows:

Joseph Boyd head m Oct 1855 Texas
Ellen A wife f May 1857 Texas
Amy daughter f May 1887 Texas
Albert son m Aug 1895 Texas
Myrtis Sanford daughter f Dec 1878 Texas
Lanna Sanford granddaughter f Feb 1897 Texas
Rayford Sanford grandson m Aug 1898 Texas
Mary S. Collier mother-in-law f Oct 1825 Louisiana
Clyde Adams adopted son m Feb 1883 Texas

Clyde Adams’ parents place of birth is listed as “unknown.” His relation to the head of the household is listed as “adopted son.” I found two genealogy forums queries asking who Clyde Adams’ parents were. The family legend is that he was born on an Indian Reservation and that his father soon died. His mother was left a widow and couldn’t raise Clyde and another sibling. The Indian Reservation operates today as the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe [3].

On December 18, 1904, in Cherokee County, Texas, Clyde Edward Adams married Willie Eugene Liles [4].

In 1910, Clyde and Willie Adams lived in Alto, Cherokee County, Texas [5].

The family appears in the 1910 census enumerated as follows:

Clyde E. Adams head m 27 Texas
Willie wife f 23 Texas
Edward son m 4 Texas
Cade son m 2 Texas

Clyde Adams’ occupation is listed as a farmer. He and Willie have been married 5 years, and she is the mother of two children, two living.

On September 12, 1918, Clyde Adams registered for the United States draft [7].

By 1920, the family has expanded. They are enumerated in the 1920 census in Precinct 2 of Cherokee County [6].

Enumerated int he household are the following:

Clyde Adams head m 35 Texas
Willie wife f 34 Texas
Edward son m 14 Texas
Cad son m 12 Texas
MayBell daughter f 10 Texas
Novice daughter f 6 Texas
Wilburn son m 5 Texas
John son m 2/12 Texas

Clyde Adams’ occupation is a farmer on a general farm.

In the 1930 United States census, the family is again found in Precinct 2 of Cherokee County, Texas [8].

Living in the household are the following:

Clyde E. Adams head m 47 Texas
Liles wife f 44 Texas
Edward son m 24 Texas
Marion C son m 22 Texas
Mae B. daughter f 20 Texas
Mavis M. daughter f 17 Texas
Wilbur son m 13 Texas
John D. son m 10 Texas
Elizabeth daughter f 4 Texas

Clyde Adams’ occupation is again farmer on a general farm.

Yet again in 1940, Clyde Adams is living in Precinct 2, Cherokee County, Texas [9].

Listed in the household are:

Clyde Adams head m 57 Texas
Willie wife f 53 Texas
Elizabeth daughter f 14 Texas
Ocie son m 6 Texas
Wilbur son m 24 Texas
Lora F. daughter-in-law f 20 Texas

Clyde Adams is a farmer.

In 1942, Clyde Adams registered for the United States draft [10].

Willie Eugene Liles Adams died on March 2, 1948, in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County, Texas [11].

Wille Eugene Liles Adams is buried in Old Palestine Cemetery, Alto, Cherokee County, Texas [12].

Clyde Edward Adams died on January 14, 1973 [13].

On his death certificate, his parents are listed as John E. Adams and Cora E. (maiden name unknown). I’ve tried to narrow down at least a John Adams in the same general area in the 1880 census without much luck. The name is too common to be certain which John Adams is the father of Clyde Adams. If there were an 1890 census there might be better luck of finding Clyde Adams’ family. Unfortunately, all census returns were lost in a fire in 1921.

Clyde Adams is buried in Old Palestine Cemetery, Alto, Cherokee County, Texas.

In the 1920 United States census, John Daniel Adams had just turned two months old. He is listed with his family in Cherokee County, Texas [6].

In 1930, John Adams is again listed with his family in Cherokee County, Texas. He is ten years old [8].

By 1940, John Daniel Adams had left his parent’s home. He is listed as head of household in Rusk, Cherokee County. This census was taken April 18-19, 1940 [14].

John D. Adams head m 20 Texas
Fern wife f 16 Texas

I can find no marriage record for the couple, but they are listed as married. John Daniel Adams’ occupation is as filling station attendant. Several months prior to the 1940 enumeration date, the couple gave birth to a daughter, Lynda Carroll Adams. She did not live [15].

The next record for John Daniel Adams I can find is in 1953. By this time, he is married to Juanita Roberson.

Children of John Daniel Adams and Juanita Roberson are:

1. Willie Mae Adams b. 12 Jul 1953 in Harris County, Texas [16]
