Athens Shaken by Sonic Boom

Athens, Texas. - A sonic boom that was heard as far away as Corsicana shook Athens Friday and at least one Athens resident reported property damage.
Obie Hopson said the blast broke a picture window and another window at his home on the Cayuga Highway. He said a strip of glass about two feet wide fell from the top of the picture window into his living room.
Ben Blackmon, general manager of the hugh Drane Ice Company, said in Athens he heard the boom before leaving his office at Corsicana for a business trip to Athens.
Officials of Chance Vought Aircraft, Inc., Dallas, were in Athens a week earlier and forewarned residents that sonic booms would be heard frequently in this area of Texas. The sherrif's office here confirmed reports that it was a sonic boom. A jet with a vapor trail was seen above the city at the time of the blast.
