Constable James Hopson Killed by Negro at Athens

Athens, Texas, Dec. 10. - Constable James W. Hopson was shot and instantly killed and Sheriff W.O. Williams injured at noon here today by George Davis, a negro, who was resisting arrest on a burglary charge. The officers attempted to arrest Davis at home. As they entered by separate doors the negro opened fire, killing Constable Hopson instantly and breaking Sheriff Williams left arm and escaped.
A posse of severel hundred quickly former (sic) and went in pursuit, scouring the country in each direction. While the fugitive was frequently reported seen they were unable to capture him.
Bloodhounds from Kaufman County reached the scene late this evening and at a late hour were still on a trail which returned to this place, indicating the negro is hiding nearby.
Hopson had been an officer of Hendreson County for a number of years and leaves an aged mother.
