Hopsons in Newspaper

ATHENS WEEKLY REVIEW
February 22, 1934

LEAGUEVILLE
(Special Correspondence)
Leagueville, Feb 19 - Another blizzard has arrived and just at the time we had decided spring was near. Seems like we’ll have to agree with the ground hog.

Rev. Spivey
filled his regular appointment at the church during the week-end.

Mr. and Mrs. Arch Crawford and children have recently moved into the community. We are very glad to have them.

Mrs. Lee Hopson and children spent part of last week in the Sam Gideon home.

Still quite a bit of sickness here. Miss Ethel Cooie, who has been very ill, is reported to be improving.

A very large crowd enjoyed a musical at the Gene Tindel home Tuesday night. Special music was furnished by the Bearcat string band of Brownsboro.

Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Hopson and T. B. Taylor were business visitors to Corsicana Thursday and Friday.

Singing continues to be good. Mr. and Mrs. Splawn and Mr. and Mrs. John Pickering and other visitors attended last Wednesday night and the writer was absent for the first time. We have probably the largest class in the county and are always glad to welcome visitors. So if you are a lover of singing, come out and be with us.

Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Fields and children spent Sunday in the C. H. Hopson home.

Mr. and Mrs. Guy Brownlow and Mr. and Mrs. Seaborn Tindel of Oklahoma were visitors here last week. Mr. Tindal and Mrs. Brownlow are former residents of the county.

Mrs. Ebb Adair who was called to the bedside of her sister at Garden Valley, has returned home.

Not much news this week; too cold to learn any.

H.M. Rounsavall - death

Arch Nichols and Russell Williams were wandering around in Leagueville, near the pipeline. They heard a shot coming from across from Ruth Horton's house. They ran up there and Johnnie Hopson had shot H.M. Rounsavall. H.M. had fired a shot at Johnnie, and Johnnie grabbed a shot gun. H.M. had grabbed the barrel and Johnnie fired, shooting off H.M.'s finger tips and into his stomach.

Dr. Horton came around to see about H.M. and told Homer: "I can probably fix your fingers up but I can't do anything about the stomach. You had better get to a hospital."

Sel Smith had a studabaker and Arch and Sel loaded H.M. up and headed to a hospital.

Highway 175 wasn't in existence, but there was a sandy road that ran through to Jacksonville. However, given the time of year, August, cars couldn't make the trip through. So, they had to drive around through Tyler to Jacksonville. On the way through Tyler they had a flat tire. Sel had a jub of moonshine in the car and during the tire change asked H.M. if he needed a drink. H.M. said, "I believe I do and you know how I like it." It was understood that H.M. wanted the moonshine straight-up and not cut with water.

After the tire change the studabaker made it to Jacksonville. H.M. was in the elevator headed to the fourth floor where surgery could take place when he died.

as re-told by my Grandad, May 22, 2016 before church. We sat in the utility room and talked about Genealogy, various people in the community, and how my work at school was going.

I am also a descendant of Wiley Marion Hopson and his wife Mary E. Howard through their son Madison Rowan Hopson b. Feb 12, 1857 m. Laura Lee. I'm afraid I do not have much info to add except that I belive Wiley Marion Hopson's mother was Agnes Hall and that she had a sister named Bashaba b 1810 m. John Dunkin. Agnes Hall Hopson is buried in the Jennings Mountain Cemetery, so of Brownsboro, TX and her grandaughter is buried near her. Agnes is suppose to have been born in Georgia or SC. If anyone has any more info, I would appreciate your sharing it. Thanks, Opal McDaniel Meyers.

I am looking for family information on my ggrandmother's side. My ggrandmother was Mary Elizabeth "Mae/Mollie" Hopson. She was born in Murchison, Henderson Co, TX on 07/14/1875 and died on 10/04/1966 in Houston, Harris Co, TX.

Her father was William "Wiley" Hopson (not sure of middle name) and mother Mary E.(Elizabeth) Howard. I'm assuming they married in Texas, but not sure. My ggrandmother had several brothers and sisters. Some of the names I've heard from family members were Cass, Wiley and possibly a Raymond. They were a muscial family who played fiddles, etc. and a wild bunch who as kids fought each other a lot. I was told that the name Hopson was Irish and Howard was Dutch or Irish.

My ggrandmother lived in the Murchison/Nacogdoches area for awhile. She married Henry Thomas Cook - twice and Edgar Cleveland. Possibly a Mr. Day, Mr. Grice and John Bunch. She had 7 kids - Eva Cleveland (Turner), Lillie Mae Cook (Henson/Moss), Era Day (Cristos), Willie Mae Cook, Doria (died at birth), Bertha Cook (Youngblook) and William Henry Cook. For awhile (between husbands, I guess) Lillie Mae and Willie Mae were placed in the Odd Fellows State Orphans Home in Corsicana, TX around 1920.

No one in my family knows much about the Hopson side, so any information would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for any information on my grandfather - Aqullar Marsh Henson and his first family. He first married a lady and had about 7 children. One daughter named Minnie )who married a guy named Hugo) and one son named Eric. Those are the only children's names I've been told.

Later he married my grandmother Lillie Mae Cook and had 16 children (13 lived). They lived in various parts of Texas. He worked in the oilfields and was a carpenter. Aqullar had 2 brothers, Chelsea and McKinley. There father was William and mother was Sarah Brown/Wallace. Aqullar was born in Ft. Graham, Hill Co., TX born before 1900.

I'm not sure if we are looking for the same people, but my grandfather was Aqullar Marsh Henson born in Ft. Graham, Hill Co, TX who also had a dad named William Marion Henson plus his mother was named Sarah. I was told Sarah's last name was Brown. Can't be sure of her last name. William Marion Henson was suppose to be born in Ohio. Do you think we are talking about the same family? Sounds like it. Did you ever find anymore information?
