Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for P.L. Smith,75 year
old resident of the Floyd community, who died at his home early 
Saturday morning. The Rev. T.J. Fair officiated at the services which 
were held at Bayou Macon church under the direction of Catron-Golden
Funeral Home of Oak Grove.

The father of 14 children, 10 of whom survive him. Mr. Smith was born 
February 14, 1866 in Smith County, Miss. He moved his family to West 
Carroll in 1916, settling near Pioneer in Ward 2, where he was active
in the community and church life of the parish until his health failed
several years ago.

Surviving the deceased are his wife, five sons, five daughters, one
sister, 30 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The sons are 
John and Earl of Darnell, Norris of Texarkana, Ark., P.L. Jr. of Ft.
Benning, Ga. and James of Floyd community. Daughters surviving are 
Mrs E.C. Smith of Oak Grove, Mrs. Paul Gentry of Darnell, Mrs. R.L.
Hooper of Floyd, Mrs. Walter Brown of Shreveport and Mrs. O.E. Materne
of Baton Rouge. One sister, Mrs. R.D. Blackwell of Taylorsville, Miss.,
also survives.

Chattanooga Times Free Press (TN) - Thursday, June 8, 1995 Deceased Name: Peter Smith DALTON, Ga. -- Peter L. Smith Jr., died Wednesday, June 7, 1995, in an Atlanta hospital. He was 78. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Lee Newberry Smith. Survivors include two daughters, Paula Young, Chatsworth and Patricia Kyle, Cleveland, Tenn.; son, Michael Smith, Dalton; eight grandchildren. Graveside services with military honors will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Harrison Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Jenkins officiating. Visitation will be today after 2 p.m. at Peeples Funeral Home, Chatsworth.

Notes on Sammy BROWN: Oak Grove (special) Funeral for Sammy Odell Brown, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Brown of Pioneer, who died at his residence Tuesday after a long illness, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Midway Church of God near Darnell. 

The Rev. Carl Owens will officiate and burial will be at Epps Cemetery by Gay’s Funeral Home of Oak Grove. 

The youth was a student at Pioneer High School where he belonged to the 4-H club. He was also a member of the Midway Church of God. 

Other survivors include two sister, Mrs. Edith Perkins of Dallas, Tex. and a Mrs. Jo Ann Harris of Longview, Tex.; and a brother, John Brown of Longview. 

Pallbearers will be cousins, Carroll Smith, Jerry Smith, Arthur Smith, Henry Smith, Joe Hooper and Larry Holley.
