Man charged in house fire that killed 2

BROWNSBORO, Texas -- A Henderson County man was charged with murder Tuesday in connection with the firebombing deaths of two Edom residents.
Deral M. Couey, 30, of Brownsboro remains in the Henderson County Jail in lieu of $45,000 bail, and authorities said the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Department was questioning a second suspect in the case.
Capt. Rock Ellis of the Van Zandt Sheriff's Department said Mr. Couey is charged in the deaths of Mary Ray, 54, and her son Mickey Ray, 28, who died in a house fire caused by a combustible bomb Sunday about midnight.
Two of Mr. Ray's children, his ex-wife and a man who was visiting the family were able to escape the house, about two miles east of Edom. Capt. Ellis said the incident was the result of a feud between Mr. Couey and Mr. Ray. Capt. Ellis said charges of arson and attempted murder are expected to be filed against Mr. Couey, who was arrested Monday at his home. Brownsboro is about 20 miles southwest of Tyler. -

Funeral services for Jennifer Shea Parmer Campbell, 31, were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 12, 2001 at Taylor Funeral Home Chapel in Timpson, Texas, with the Rev. Clark Stricklin officiating. Interment followed at Oaklawn Cemetery, Center, Texas.
Survivors are parents, Kenneth E. and Molly Campbell of Timpson; one daughter, Skyler Tonea McGee of Tyler, Tx; one son, Tevin Maurice McGee of Tyler, Tx; two sisters, Michelle Fanguy and husband, J. J. of Timpson, and Kenna Pate and husband, Jason of Nacogdoches; one brother, Jerrod Campbell and wife Linsey of Timpson; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Pallbearers were Wayne Smith, Ben Bearden, Bobby Joe Stephens, Billy Wilson, Gregg Wyatt and Monty Cain.

Jennifer died from injuries sustained during an assault. Her ex-boyfriend, Darron Dwayne Miller, was arrested by police after a brief pursuit. Her co-workers told police they had noticed problems between the pair before and that Miller often came to the restaurant where Campbell worked to check up on her."

Athens, Texas. Feb. 25. - George Davis, negro, who killed Constable J. W. Hopson here some time ago, was given a life sentence, verdict being ordered last night after the jury had deliberated for forty-eight hours. Davis was taken to jail in Dallas.

Athens, Texas, Dec. 10. - Constable James W. Hopson was shot and instantly killed and Sheriff W.O. Williams injured at noon here today by George Davis, a negro, who was resisting arrest on a burglary charge. The officers attempted to arrest Davis at home. As they entered by separate doors the negro opened fire, killing Constable Hopson instantly and breaking Sheriff Williams left arm and escaped.
A posse of severel hundred quickly former (sic) and went in pursuit, scouring the country in each direction. While the fugitive was frequently reported seen they were unable to capture him.
Bloodhounds from Kaufman County reached the scene late this evening and at a late hour were still on a trail which returned to this place, indicating the negro is hiding nearby.
Hopson had been an officer of Hendreson County for a number of years and leaves an aged mother.

Edwin Earnest Smith - death

DOUBLE TRAGEDY
Two young farmers meet on the streets of Chillicothe, Tx., have a duel unto death.
They were brothers-in-law and had a deep-seated grudge which terminated in a horrible manner.
A double killing, the worst that ever happened in this country, took place at Chillicothe yesterday evening at five o’clock, in which two young Wilbarger County farmers lost their lives.
An eye-witness tells us the following:
Joe Smith, a quarter-breed Indian and ex-school teacher, had married the sister of Tom Robbins and the three young people were living together on the former’s farm, three miles East of Chillicothe. Joe was a little man, well thought of by his neighbors, while his brother-in-law was single and a big, strapping fellow, a cousin to Jno. W. Robbins the ex- State treasurer. The two raised a crop together and had a falling-out afterwards. They did not speak to each other, though Robbins continued living at the other’s house.
Yesterday evening Smith, his wife and little baby drove to Chillicothe to meet a relative, who was to come in on the train, while Robbins came to town afterwards. Our informant says he saw a little man lean against a post in front of a Drug Store, when a big, burly fellow came forward and without warning hit him a terrible blow with his fist. Both men drew their knives and Smith’s soon found it’s way to the other’s heart, while he himself was mortally wounded by a knife thrust in the back. Robbins die instantly. While Smith lingered about twenty minutes.
The tragedy was over in a few seconds and the grief of Mrs. Smith, who had been in the Drug Store, was one of the saddest things imaginable to witness.
Sheriff Walker, who had left town a few minutes before was notified upon his arrival at Quanah of what had happened and returned on the next train.
The Woodmen of the World took charge of the body of Smith and it was shipped back to his old home in Anderson County this morning.

Corrections:
Smith’s name was Ernest Edwin (not sure where the Joe came from) and was not thought to have Indian blood; his body was brought back to HENDERSON COUNTY where he was buried in New Hope Community Cemetery beside two infant children. He was the son of Phelps and Sarah Jane Brownlow Smith.
